0248School for Children with Special Needs, Bern

The new building of the special needs school in Bümpliz complements the heterogeneous development and opens up to the residential neighborhood with a large outdoor area. The sports hall, as the tallest part of the building, connects the volumes and aligns with neighboring gymnasiums. A variety of outdoor spaces of different sizes encourage activities and provide room for both students and the public. The school grounds are divided into four areas, with the schoolyard at the center, surrounded by school gardens and playgrounds. An outdoor terrace extends the cafeteria. The open interior connects all units, promoting orientation, interaction, and communication through well-proportioned central spaces and direct access to open areas.
